Rhythmic Expressionist

Visual artist with a rhythmic expressionist language, closely related to music. Representative of the Mexican painting 50th generation. With dozens of national and international awards and considered by art critics as a prolific and versatile artist. Jazzamoart has presented his work in about five hundred exhibitions in Mexico, USA, Canada, Latin America, Europe, South Korea and Japan. His visual improvisations and scenes have accompanied on stage main exponents of Mexican and American jazz. As an illustrator and drummer has worked in several books, CD’s, LP’s. He has been a member of the National System of Art Creators CONACULTA

A visual artist, heir of the Guanajuato artistic tradition, with a rhythmic expressionist language, intimately related to music, men’s passions and the every way of life. His visual improvisations and sceneries have appeared with main jazz musicians. Representative of generation of the 50’s and Mexican contemporary painting, with dozens of national and international recognitions, considered by the specialized critics as a prolific and versatile artist, in constant evolution.

Jazzamoart has presented his work in more than 340 exhibitions in México, USA, Canada, Latin America, West Europe and Japan, his work is in important public and private collections, and he has collaborated in diverse publications, workshops, conferences and LP´s & CD’s. Member of the Creators’ National System of Art of the CONACULTA from 1993 to 2000.

Chronology

Visual artist with an expressionist language intimately tied to music.

Considered by writer Carlos Montemayor as one of the three great artists from Guanajuato, alongside Diego Rivera and José Chávez Morado. A representative of the generation of Mexican artists born in the 1950s, his work has received numerous national and international awards. Described by art critics as a prolific and multifaceted artist, Jazzamoart has presented his work in over 500 exhibitions across Mexico, the U.S., Canada, Latin America, Western Europe, and countries in Asia such as China, South Korea, and Japan. His visual improvisations and stage designs have accompanied leading jazz performers on stage. As an illustrator and drummer, he has collaborated on books, LPs, and CDs. He has been a member of Mexico’s National System of Art Creators on three occasions.

2025
Exhibits at El Laberinto del Rey in Toledo, Spain, the Contemporary Art Museum of Tamaulipas, and Domínguez Buis Gallery in Xalapa. Participates in the Warholenado show at Rhino Gallery and in Tribute to Alejo Carpentier at the Salón de la Plástica Mexicana. Collaborates on works with Carmen Parra and Emiliano Gironella. Illustrates books by Marcela Campos and Alain Derbez. Continues creating large-format oil paintings up to ten meters in length.

2024
Unveils the sculpture Trío fresero in the Historic Center of Irapuato. Holds an exhibition and book presentation on his bullfighting-themed work at Las Ventas Plaza in Madrid. Shows large-format pieces at Zona Maco Art Fair with Óscar Román Gallery. Participates in the exhibition Parafraseando a Picasso at the San Ildefonso Museum in Mexico City.

2023
Presents the book Viaje al fondo de la pintura at Sala Ponce of the Palacio de Bellas Artes. Exhibits at the MACAY Fernando García Ponce Museum in Mérida, the Conde Rul Museum in Guanajuato, and the Museum of Oaxacan Painters in Oaxaca. Inaugurates a mural at the City Theater of Irapuato. Represents Mexico at Pinta Art Fair during Miami Art Week.

2022
Exhibits and is honored at the Mexican Consulate in Miami. The documentary Vivir la vida como jazz by filmmaker Floria González premieres on Canal 22 and receives recognition at Docs Without Borders, Pantalla de Cristal, Chicago Film Awards, and Montreal Independent Film Festival. Exhibits at Gran Real Peña in Madrid, Spain, and presents Goles de Pintura at MAD Gallery. Contributes the main piece to Cow Parade on Paseo de la Reforma in Mexico City.

2021
Celebrates his 70th birthday with a street performance featuring live jazz and seven exhibitions, including at the Tlalpan Museum of Art and History (with Eloy Tarcisio), Galería Urbana (with Armando Romero), Fundación Sebastián, the Irapuato City Museum, and the Cervantino International Festival. Receives the Vasco de Quiroga Award, the highest honor from the city of Irapuato.

2020
Shows photography and painting at Óscar Román Gallery, reinterpreting works by photographers like Juan Rulfo, Enrique Bostelmann, Lourdes Grobet, and others. Exhibits a sound-interactive collection at MADART Gallery.

2019
Represents Mexico at the Beijing Biennale at the National Art Museum of China. Participates in Long Live Rembrandt at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Holds exhibitions at the Mexican Institute in Spain, the Bicentennial Cultural Center Museum, and the Football Museum in Pachuca. Publishes La vida de la pintura, 50 texts about his work.

2018
Receives the Merit in Arts Award from the Mexico City Legislative Assembly and the Ibero-American Medal from the Honoris Causa Foundation. Solo exhibits at Galería Corsica (Puerto Vallarta), Óscar Román (Mexico City), the Guanajuato Museum of Art and History, and YLK Gallery (Madrid). Restores and reopens Festín de los jazzeros mural at Mexico’s National Auditorium. Exhibits his soccer-themed work in Gostiny Dvor during the FIFA World Cup in Moscow.

2017
Launches the book La soledad del pintor at the Museum of Modern Art in Mexico. Receives accolades from the University of Guanajuato, the Mexican Senate, the Forjadores de México Foundation, and the Gaviota International Award. Exhibits at MAD Gallery, Campo Marte, Kunalahde Gallery (León), Mexican Cultural Institute in Guatemala, 4W43 Gallery (New York), and La Bottega dell’Acquaforte (Laguna Beach, USA).

2016
Inaugurates a mural at the Mexico City Museum. Participates in The Art of Music at the Palace of Fine Arts Museum. Exhibits at the Salón de la Plástica Mexicana, Monterrey Metropolitan Museum, Quixote Museum (Guanajuato), San Agustín (Zacatecas), and Jalisco Jazz Festival (Guadalajara), receiving recognition for his contribution to jazz in Mexico.

2015
Releases the book Sólo a fuerza de pintar at the Palacio de Bellas Artes. Exhibits at the Dolores Olmedo Museum, Jazz Museum in Rotterdam, Museo del Pueblo in Guanajuato, Kons Gallery (Madrid), and MEX I AM Festival (San Francisco). Participates in Arte Sano Biennial (Popular Art Museum), and the Havana Art Biennial. Creates a Day of the Dead street installation at MoMA in New York. Receives the Humberto Peraza Award and takes part in several projects across Mexico and abroad.

2014
Exhibits at Galería Urbana in Mexico City and at Hugo Rivera Gallery and Jorge Méndez Gallery in California, USA. Creates joint works with visual artists Vladimir Cora and Amador Montes at Óscar Román Gallery and Hacienda San Mateo in Atlixco, Puebla. Paints a series of scale model trains, illustrates the Matador yearbook, and participates in the exhibition One Hundred Years with Julio Cortázar at the Gabriel García Márquez Cultural Center in Bogotá, Colombia, and at the National Palace of the Arts in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

2013
Shows work at Galería Star in Madrid, Spain; Tamayo Art Gallery in Los Angeles, California; National Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago, Illinois; Sungnam Art Centre in Seoul, South Korea; the Senate of the Republic, and at Salón Dès Aztecas in Mexico.

2012
Solo exhibitions at the MACAY Museum, Galería Star in Madrid, Óscar Román Gallery in Mexico, and at the Maestro Awards Gala by Latino Leaders in Dallas. Participates in the IAAF at Hangaram Art Museum in Seoul, South Korea, and in group shows at the Querétaro Museum, North Sea Jazz Festival (Netherlands), National Palace Gallery in Mexico, León Museum, Monterrey Art Museum, and De Zeta Art Gallery in Houston, Texas. Illustrates the CD Jazz for Friends by Quinto Elemento and the book Caer en lo que no era by writer Ajay Heble.

2011
Exhibits stone sculpture at the Palace of Fine Arts Museum and large-format paintings at José Luis Cuevas Museum. Participates in the Arte Américas Fair in Miami, Florida. Receives an honorary doctorate from La Salle University and performs at the Guelph Jazz Festival in Ontario, Canada.

2010
Exhibits at the Legislative Palace Museum, Mexico Library, Basilica of Guadalupe Museum, SHCP Museum, and Óscar Román Gallery. Illustrates the CD La Revue de Cuisine, published by FONCA. Also exhibits at the City Museum, National Museum of Anthropology, and Nina Torres Fine Art in Miami.

2009
The city of Irapuato inaugurates the Jazzamoart Art Gallery and publishes a book on his work featuring texts by Carlos Montemayor and Jorge Juanes. Exhibits at Laberinto Museum and Piso 51 in Torre Mayor, Mexico City. His work is added to the Museum of Latin American Art (MOLAA) in California, USA.

2008
Exhibits at the North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam, Netherlands; Metropolitan Cultural Space in Tampico, Tamaulipas; Puebla City Theater; and the Presidente Intercontinental Hotel in Mexico City. Designs stage sets for the UNAM Jazz Festival.

2007
Exhibits at Henaine Fine Art Gallery in New York, the Costumbrista Museum of Sonora, the Raúl Anguiano Museum in Guadalajara, Franz Mayer Museum, and the Mexico-Japan sculpture encounter in Mérida, Yucatán. Wins the International Art Call prize for the Guelph Jazz Festival in Ontario, Canada.

2006
Creates a sculpture for Mexico’s Children’s Museum and exhibits at the WTC, the Mexican Stock Exchange, and ITAM. Also exhibits at Castle Gallery in New York and Vismara Gallery in Milan, Italy. Wins first prize in Artelista, Barcelona, Spain.

2005
Exhibits at the Tour de la Bourse in Montreal, Canada, and the Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art in Kobe, Japan. Designs the award for the Mexican Jazz Festival, later awarded to Wayne Shorter and Diana Krall. Wins first prize at the International Modern Art Contest in Australia.

2004
Creates a totem sculpture in Quebec, Canada. Exhibits at the Manuel Felguérez Abstract Art Museum and at the Montreal Jazz Festival. Receives the Key to the City and the Silver Gardenia in Nayarit.

2003
Exhibits at the Mexican Institute in San Antonio, Texas, and Washington, D.C. Participates in Prodigies of the End of the Century at MARCO Museum in Monterrey, Nuevo León. Creates monumental sculptures for the Chactemal Corridor and the Juan Soriano Sculpture Garden.

2002
Participates in a group show with the Archivos Collection at Reina Sofía Museum in Madrid and receives the Jaiba de Oro award in Tamaulipas.

2001
Exhibits at José Luis Cuevas Museum, the Mexico City International Airport, and New Gallery Space in New York, USA.

2000
Participates in exhibitions at MUCA (UNAM), Cabañas Cultural Institute in Guadalajara, MACAY in Mérida, and The Rye Arts Center in New York, USA.

1999
Participates in shows at the SHCP Museum and San Ildefonso College Museum. Receives the San Juan Bautista Medal from La Salle University.

1998
Exhibits at Kyra Maralt Gallery in Berlin, Germany. Named Honorary Member of the Visual Arts Committee of Guanajuato. Works at Fernando Leal’s studio in Milan, Italy.

1997
Exhibits at Pecanins and Kin galleries in Mexico, the Mexican Cultural Institute in Copenhagen, Denmark, the Toy Museum of Sintra in Lisbon, Portugal, and the Museum of the Americas in Denver, Colorado, USA.

Exhibits at Norske Grafikere Gallery in Oslo, Norway, and in museums in Kerava, Joensuu, and Rovaniemi in Helsinki, Finland.

1995
Creates monumental sculptures in Hollywood, California, and at the San Ángel Cultural Center in Mexico City.

1994
Exhibits at the Belém Cultural Center in Lisbon, Portugal, and at the Fine Arts Institute in San José, Costa Rica. Receives an Honorable Mention at the National Pascual Painting Biennial in Mexico City.

1993
Participates in the Europalia Festival in Ostend, Belgium, and the Osaka Triennial in Japan.

1992
Creates a monumental sculpture and stage design for the National Auditorium Jazz Festival, featuring B.B. King, Ray Charles, and others.

1991
Exhibits at the WTC in Los Angeles, California. Receives an Honorable Mention at the IV Diego Rivera National Biennial (Drawing category).

1990
With support from the Martel family, sets up a studio in Paris, France. In Mexico, exhibits at the Museum of Modern Art and the National Print Museum. Wins the Historic Center Festival Award.

1989
Creates a 360 m² mural at UAM (Autonomous Metropolitan University). Receives an Honorable Mention in the Dante Alighieri competition and wins the French Revolution Bicentennial Award.

1988
Exhibits at Scott Alan Gallery in New York and at Mexico City’s Museum of Modern Art. Receives Honorable Mention at the National Visual Arts Salon (Drawing category).

1987
Exhibits at the Carrillo Gil Art Museum and the Bronx Museum of Art in New York. Receives Honorable Mention in 50 Years for Nutrition exhibition. Wins Acquisition Prize at the National Painting Salon.

Participates in Confrontación 86 at the Palace of Fine Arts and in the Cuenca Biennial (Ecuador). Receives Honorable Mention at the III Rufino Tamayo Biennial and Grand Prize at the Miami Biennial, USA.
